From attempting to hide his sight challenges and enlist in the USA, through the challenges of basic training, to the horrors and pathos of combat along with post war experiences in a defeated nation, the author never fails to engage the reader with his true feelings and even an occasional bit of humor. Anyone interested in knowing what WWII was like for the "average" (whatever that it) GI will want to read this short book and will not be disappointed.
