by J. Timothy Johnson (Author)

A Path Too Narrow? chronicles the improbable journey of Dr. J. Timothy Johnson, retired international reproductive health scientist. It begins with his birth in England in 1939 in a rural international religious pacifist commune, and follows his childhood in communes in Paraguay, England, North Dakota and Pennsylvania.

Tim looks back and considers those years in the Bruderhof, a life of his parents' choosing, acknowledging the massive shifts both in his thinking and in that of the Bruderhof which ultimately resulted in his expulsion from the commune at age 18. His subsequent adult journeys, fostered by mentors, drive and luck, brought him into academic studies and professional interests he could not have dreamed of as a commune child.

Dr. Johnson spent his career in international population and public reproductive health, primarily centered in Asia and Africa, as a civil servant for US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), leading collaborative work between the Division for Reproductive Health and the Population Division of the Office of Population at USAID.

A Path Too Narrow? is Dr. Johnson's story of forging his own path, and the remarkable, improbable journey which began with his parents' choice to join the Bruderhof in 1938.
