by Thomas Burton Spademan (Author)

Between March 23, 1876 and October 6, 1879, Ohio pioneer Wyllys Terrell, Jr. wrote a series of articles for the Elyria Constitution newspaper as part of the country's celebration of the Centennial. Written under the pseudonym An Old Hunter, these articles present a first-hand account of pioneer life in Ohio in the early 1800s: hunting bear as a young boy with his friend Chief Good Hunt, the sweet joy of eating pan-cooked bread after having lived for months on the slender fare of "jointed corn, pumpkins, and milk," later running the Indian Tavern, and generally taking part in the development of a frontier into prosperous farms and a thriving township. This book contains these articles, freshly transcribed and presented in order of publication.
