Two girls with a particularly rare skill live in the tranquil, picturesque town of Watchtower Harbor. Sophie and Julia have the ability to hear the wishes of youngsters who are missing their loved ones while they are deployed and transmit their messages throughout the world.

Jessica Beck is a third-grade teacher. She observes Jimmy Andrews, one of her students, is depressed one day. She is very aware of what he is going through. Jimmy's brother is currently serving in Afghanistan. When she was a child, her brother was stationed in Bosnia. She discovered a unique way to communicate with her brother by sending wishes to the universe in the hopes that something or someone would hear her and pass them on to him.

Ms. Beck takes a risk and informs Jimmy about wishing on the universe. His favorite teacher, he says, is cuckoo Cocoa Puffs. But what else can Jimmy do? He is desperate to hear from his brother and will go to any length to do so. He makes his wish.
