In Ascent of Mt. Carmel, St. John of the Cross provides a road map for the mystical journey to union with God. The poem recounts John's passage through a dark night of faith on his journey. Author Biography

San Juan De La Cruz (St. John of the Cross) (1542-1591) joined the Carmelite Order in Spain when he was twenty-one. Living in a time of great religious controversy, he was kidnapped and imprisoned--an experience of deep suffering that formed the basis for much of his writing.
