He was educated at Yale University, where he was a personal assistant to Josef Albers, and received his M.F.A. from UC Berkeley. He previously was professor at Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA, and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the San Francisco Art Institute. He has coauthored or coedited several publications, including Asian American Art: A History, 1850-1970 (Stanford University Press, 2008), Chang Dai-chien in California (San Francisco State University, 1999), Changing and Unchanging Things: Noguchi and Hasegawa in Postwar Japan (University of California Press, 2019), and The Saburo Hasegawa Reader (University of California Press, 2019). He holds a Ph.D. from Brown University and an M.A. from Vanderbilt University, both in art history. He also held research positions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum.
