This novella traces Alexa's doomed, decades-long affair with her classmate Isaac, the son of a Russian oligarch. When Isaac resurfaces in her life at the outset of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Alexa's world suddenly shifts. Coats has "expansive concerns," as Kim Fu writes in her introduction: "a sophisticated understanding of power at every level: between men and women, between classes, between nations, the money that runs the world."
