When he was a teenager he wavered between wanting to spend his life as a fisherman, Afro Cuban drummer, or novelist. He went to Kenyon College and did graduate study at New York University. His work has appeared in \u003ci\u003eEsquire\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eNew York \u003c\/i\u003emagazine, the\u003ci\u003e New York Times Sunday Magazine, \u003c\/i\u003e the\u003ci\u003e New York Times Book Review\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eOutside\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eSports Illustrated\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eForbes\u003c\/i\u003e, the\u003ci\u003e Huffington Post\u003c\/i\u003e, and the\u003ci\u003e Daily Beast\u003c\/i\u003e, among other publications.
