In 1849 the San Antonio-El Paso Military Road was built. To protect that road in the trans-pecos region Fort Davis was built in 1854 by the US Army and named after the then Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis. From then on it not only protected that road but also the Rio Grande Big Bend region of West Texas. With the secession of Texas and it joining the Confederate States of America Fort Davis passed into the control of the CS Army. This narrative focuses on the little known period of the fort from 1861-1865 when it was occupied by Grey Pony Soldiers from Texas.
