Human beings have always formed personal friendships. Some cultures have left behind the evidence of philosophical discussion; some have provided only private or semipublic letters. Brian Patrick McGuire is Professor of Medieval History at the Institute for Culture and Identity at Roskilde University. He is the author of Jean Gerson and the Last Medieval Reformation.
