The author

Velma Caulker Mitchell was born and raised mostly in Freetown, Sierra Leone, with an interval of four years childhood in the UK and US. Following her teenage years in Freetown, she returned to the US for university studies at New York University and Hunter College, City University of New York. She holds a Diploma in Education from Fourah Bay College -- University of Sierra Leone, and a Master's in Urban Education from Iona College, NY. Married to an African American who spent several years as a missionary in Sierra Leone when they were young, she eventually returned with him to the US, where she taught English Language and Literature for 23 years in a New York suburban high school, and another 10 at a suburban community college. She has 3 grown children and 2 grandchildren.
