Forced to re-enlist with the army after a crash, he became a dispatch rider, but another accident saw an end to his career in the services.\u003cbr\u003eAfter picking up a comic and being unimpressed by the writing inside, Cowan wrote to Stan Boddington, then editor of \u003cb\u003eChampion\u003c\/b\u003e. Boddington gave him a chance and Cowan started on \u003ci\u003eGinger Nutt\u003c\/i\u003e - a successful strip about a young Australian boy, which ran for almost seven years.\u003cbr\u003eCowan's next strip - \u003ci\u003eThe Jungle Robot\u003c\/i\u003e - appeared in the first issue of \u003cb\u003eLion\u003c\/b\u003e. Many adventures featuring Robot Archie were to follow.
