Author Biography

George Craufurd of Cartsburn (1684-1748) was the third son of Thomas Craufurd of Cartsburn. There is a lengthy account of his father's life in the mansucript, but of himself he says nothing. He was a genealogist and historian. His books include "A History of the Stewarts" (1710), "A General History of the Shire of Renfrew"(1710), and "The Lives of the Crown Officers of Scotlalnd (1726). He married Jean, daughter of James Anderson, an eminent antiquary and author of "Diplomata Scotiae", which is quoted in this present work. This manuscript was transcribed from the original by Dr. A. R. Crawfurd, a retired English physician descendant of another branch of Crawford, the Crawfurds of Ardmillan. He also compiled "Heraldry of the Crawfurd Family" published in The House of Crawford, Vol. I.
