Illegible or plainspoken, crude or whimsical, Friedlander's signs are an unselfconscious portrait of modern life. \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cb\u003eLee Friedlander\u003c\/b\u003e (born 1934) began photographing in 1948.
