Yassmin trained as a mechanical engineer and worked on oil and gas rigs for years before becoming a writer and broadcaster. She published her memoir, \u003ci\u003eYassmin's Story\u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003e, \u003c\/i\u003e at age 24, and followed up with her first fiction book for younger readers, \u003ci\u003eYou Must Be Layla\u003c\/i\u003e, in 2019.
