The International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet (NATO phonetic alphabet) enhances safety by encouraging clear communication with first responders and search and rescue authorities. The code is comprised of 26 code words assigned to the letters of the Roman alphabet. Each letter is easily distinguishable over radio and telephone regardless of language barriers and connection quality.
