These four books give a more complete picture of what the trail is like for a family. These fictional letters are historically accurate and reflect the living conditions, slang, and attitudes of the 1850s. John Harding himself is a farmer from Tennessee, anti-slavery, lives a Christian life, and has his own political views which may or may not be the views of the author. He is a man of his time.
