With Steinbeck's \u003ci\u003eThe Grapes of Wrath\u003c\/i\u003e the uniting of determinism and freedom finds its fullest realization in the concept of dual selves, one determined, one free. In Faulkner's \u003ci\u003eThe Sound and the Fury\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eAbsalom, Absalom!\u003c\/i\u003e the concept of the dual self appears in its most complex form. The developments in the work of Steinbeck and Faulkner, Conder believes, bring the classic phase of American literary naturalism to a close.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e \u003ci\u003eNaturalism in American Fiction\u003c\/i\u003e illuminates a group of major literary works and revives a theoretic consideration of naturalism.
