Contained within this publication are complete transcriptions of advertisements and articles mostly about Afro-American slaves, as well as indentured servants, and free people of color. These items were published in the Greensborough Patriot newspaper (Greensboro, North Carolina) from 1826 to 1865. Though composed through slave owners' perspective, these news items nevertheless provide a glimpse into the lives of slaves. Useful data such as the names of slaves, detailed physical descriptions, and names of immediate family members; skills the slaves' possessed as well as the names of previous owners are often provided. Thus, the information gleaned within this volume will prove extremely valuable for individuals tracing their Afro-American ancestry and for scholars of North Carolina history.
