In 1819 King Kamehameha decreed an end to the traditional Hawaiian religion, one based on strict caste separation, sacrifices, and sometimes cruelty. At about the same time, the first Christian missionaries sailed from Boston to Hawai'i. The Hawaiians welcomed the missionaries with open arms. These missionaries and the many who followed shaped the future of Hawai'i. Their most lasting physical legacy is the many churches they built. Many of these churches are in use today. This book is an illustrated tour of several of the most famous and beautiful missionary churches in West Hawai'i. The large color illustrations are enhanced and modified to remove 20th century artifacts and present the churches as they appeared when new, as if painted by a 19th century artist. Each illustration is accompanied by a brief history of the church.
