Proofreading is an essential part of the publishing process. However, it is not just a matter of reading what is written and picking up errors so they can be fixed.

As humans we naturally 'fix' minor errors that we see - in everything. This is especially so in the written word. So, we need to train ourselves to actually see those minor (and sometimes not so minor) errors.

The language of the proofreader is used by, not only the proofreader, but also the copy editor and the layout designer. Because of this there are commonly accepted mark-up symbols used so all parties can understand each other.
