After the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, the breath of freedom from Prague Spring was choked. In 1980, Jonathan with his wife Patience, are traveling to Basel. They are allowed by the Czechoslovakian state tourist agency CEDOK to visit Prague. The Edwards are closely watched from the time they cross the border. Jonathan's earlier service in American army intelligence is known to the secret police or StB. Jan Janocek, a young Czech tour guide takes the Edwards through Parague. In a secluded garden below Prague castle, Janocek gives the Edwards an unexpected and cryptic message. He has information for American intelligence. Following Janocek's clues, Jonathan and Patience find the microdot. They are challenged with getting it out of the country. The surveillance intensifies as they flee through the ancient border town of Cesky Krumlov. While trying to reach Austria, the Edwards are tracked by the StB through Bohemia, Moravia and Bratislava and attempt a dangerous night crossing of the Danube. The microdot contains more than they were told.
