He directed his first film, \u003ci\u003e La Fille de l'eau\u003c\/i\u003e, in 1925 and followed it with many others, including his masterpieces\u003ci\u003e Grand Illusion\u003c\/i\u003e (1937) and \u003ci\u003eThe Rules of the Game \u003c\/i\u003e(1939). In 1975 Jean Renoir received an Academy Award for his lifetime contribution to the cinema. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cb\u003eRobert L. Herbert\u003c\/b\u003e, after a long career at Yale, is now Andrew W. Mellon Professor Emeritus of Humanities at Mount Holyoke.
