After serving in the Civil War, the author went west to find his fortune in the mountains of Colorado. Travelling by steamboat and wagon, he passed through the barren plains and survived an Indian attack. Arriving in Georgetown, Colorado, he threw himself into learning the business of prospecting, mining and assaying. In 1920, he decided to record the details of his "Rocky Mountain Adventure".
