He earned a BA from Western Washington University, an MA from Hollins College, an MFA from Bowling Green State University, and a PhD from the University of Utah. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e Cairns is the author of eight books of poetry, including \u003ci\u003eThe Theology of Doubt \u003c\/i\u003e(1985), \u003ci\u003eThe Translation of Babel \u003c\/i\u003e(1990), \u003ci\u003ePhilokalia \u003c\/i\u003e(2002), \u003ci\u003eIdiot Psalms \u003c\/i\u003e(2014), and \u003ci\u003eSlow Pilgrim: The Collected Poems \u003c\/i\u003e(2015)\u003ci\u003e. \u003c\/i\u003eHis writing has appeared in \u003ci\u003eThe Atlantic, The Paris Review, The New Republic, Poetry, \u003c\/i\u003eand elsewhere, and has been anthologized in \u003ci\u003eBest Spiritual Writing \u003c\/i\u003eand \u003ci\u003eBest American Spiritual Writing.\u003c\/i\u003e Besides writing poetry, Cairns has also written a spiritual memoir, \u003ci\u003eShort Trip to the Edge \u003c\/i\u003e(2007), and the libretto for the oratorios \"The Martyrdom of Saint Polycarp\" and \"A Melancholy Beauty.\" Spirituality plays an integral role in Cairns' writing; in an interview, he said, \"I've come to think of beauty as how God woos us to himself. One doesn't so much create it or illuminate it as partake of it. Thereafter, one participates, collaborates, in its endless development.\" \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e Cairns has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and was awarded the Denise Levertov Award in 2014. He has taught at numerous universities including University of North Texas, Old Dominion University, Seattle Pacific University, and the University of Missouri.
