Doctor John Robins strides to achieve true worth by progressing the world of science and mathematics. But after sixty-two exhausting years of insignificance, he spends his days drinking red ale in a hotel bar deep in the mountains of Colorado. As a result, John's mind abuses him with a constant loop of insults and criticism.

After a night of two too many, John wakes up to see a bell materialize from within his closet. Its unworldly sound lifts him to a state that he has never experienced. Over the following weeks, orbs appear in his closet and entities begin visiting John. Although the creatures are too complex for his eyes to comprehend, his curious mind pressures John to learn more about his uninvited guests.

He uncovers clues that suggest that the orbs might actually be doorways from a higher dimension. The different entities start competing for John's trust, and he soon finds himself as the key object in a momentous game of strategy. Now, drinking heavier than ever, the doctor is faced with a chance to either solve the mystery of the visitations and achieve true worth, or fail once again and suffer a lifetime more of his mind's torment.
