A young boy and his train engineer father drive a steam train taking products from the country to the city. They encounter a dragon on the tracks and try various things before finally thinking of a way to remove the dragon and complete their journey to the city. There they get products from the city and take them back to the country. At the end of the book there are suggestions for discussing brainstorming, bartering, commerce, and the differences between the country and the city.
