A former Senior Fulbright Lecturer in American literature in Germany, he has won NEA, Guggenheim, the American Academy \u0026amp; Institute of Arts \u0026amp; Letters, and other awards. His graduate degrees are from Ohio University, and SUNY recently awarded him an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. He edited \u003ci\u003eSeptember 11, 2001: American Writers Respond\u003c\/i\u003e (Etruscan Press). His work has appeared in hundreds of magazines and anthologies. His \u003ci\u003eCrazy Horse in Stillness\u003c\/i\u003e won the Small Press Book Award, \u003ci\u003eShoah Train\u003c\/i\u003e was a finalist for the National Book Award, and \u003ci\u003eA Poetics of Hiroshima\u003c\/i\u003e was a selection of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle.
