by Terry L. Baldridge (Author)

The Hanging Rock Iron Region spanned an area slightly over 2,000 square miles. This region, which included furnaces extending from Logan, Ohio in the north to several miles south of Louisa, Kentucky, encompassed various counties. In Kentucky, these counties were Boyd, Carter, Greenup, and Lawrence, while in Ohio they were Gallia, Hocking, Jackson, Lawrence, Scioto, and Vinton.
The Hanging Rock Iron Region boasted 72 charcoal iron furnaces and was one of the premiere iron producers in the country. The iron produced from this region greatly contributed to the expansion of the railroad, military operations, and everyday life. As a result, it played a pivotal role in the historical development of the United States, aiding both the country's territorial growth and its ascendancy to a global powerhouse.
