He later began writing other works of fiction and published more than seventy short stories in many magazines, including \u003ci\u003eThe Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, \u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eRedbook\u003c\/i\u003e. His first novel, \u003ci\u003eThe Broken Place, \u003c\/i\u003ewas published in 1968.
