Guy Fawkes was born in York on 13 April 1568 but at the age of 37 Fawkes was hung drawn and quartered for treason against the crown of England on the 31st January 1606. He had plotted to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne of England by blowing up the Houses of Parliament with gunpowder. Fortunately the plotters were betrayed and arrested in the under croft of the Houses of Parliament which was situated just below the House of Lords. On November 5th 1605 the very night that the Gunpowder Plot was foiled, bonfires were set alight to celebrate the safety of the King. Since then, November 5th has become known as Bonfire Night. The event is commemorated every year with fireworks and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire. This is another very funny poke at history in a series of fully coloured illustrated enjoyable books by author and illustrator John L D Barnett.
