It's the early 1990s and Hugh Gallon has recently finished his sixth - form exams and looking forward to starting university. He is offered a summer job digging the roads and he sees this as a chance to live out the tales of the rough camaraderie of the navvy life told to him by his much-loved grandfather and to connect with the Irish immigrant community his wealthy parents believe that they have risen above.
