In 2000 he published \u003ci\u003eCracks in the Wall\u003c\/i\u003e, a nonfiction book about China. \u003ci\u003eThe Art of Hearing Heartbeats\u003c\/i\u003e, his first novel, became an international best seller, and was followed by two sequels, \u003ci\u003eA Well-Tempered Heart\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eThe Heart Remembers\u003c\/i\u003e.
