Pioneering spirit and economic\u003cbr\u003eenterprise linked them to Seminole Indians, venture capitalists, and colorful\u003cbr\u003eentrepreneurs along the New River settlement; today they're recognized as a\u003cbr\u003efounding family of Fort Lauderdale and their riverfront home has been restored\u003cbr\u003eand designated a National Historic Landmark.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eFrank Stranahan came south from Ohio in 1893 to run an overnight camp on the\u003cbr\u003estagecoach line carrying passengers from Lake Worth to the Miami area. He soon\u003cbr\u003eopened a trading post that thrived on commerce in pelts, plumes, and hides with\u003cbr\u003eSeminole Indians, who in turn purchased goods and groceries to take back to\u003cbr\u003etheir camps in the Everglades. Stranahan's business interests expanded to\u003cbr\u003einclude real estate and banking. An honest businessman, he became a respected\u003cbr\u003epolitical and civic leader, instrumental in the birth of Fort Lauderdale in\u003cbr\u003e1911. When the Florida land boom collapsed and his bank closed, Stranahan's\u003cbr\u003emental and physical health failed, and he committed suicide in 1929. \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIvy\u003cbr\u003eCromartie, a native Floridian, was 18 when she arrived at the settlement as its\u003cbr\u003efirst schoolteacher and met her future husband. Energetic and articulate, she\u003cbr\u003efocused her activities outside the home. Besides teaching, she was active in a\u003cbr\u003evariety of reform movements ranging from Audubon Society efforts to save the\u003cbr\u003eplume birds to temperance and women's suffrage, working mainly through the\u003cbr\u003eFlorida Federation of Women's Clubs. She is best remembered for her role as an\u003cbr\u003eadvocate for Indigenous American rights--especially education and child\u003cbr\u003ewelfare--primarily with the Friends of the Seminoles, an organization she\u003cbr\u003eestablished in the 1930s.
