by A. K. Groeger (Author)

James Cotter was hanged for rape in 1720. His execution was followed by widespread rioting in Ireland where there was a strong belief he was wrongly executed. There are many reasons for his execution - the Penal Laws, his wealth, the Quakers, his activities as a leading anti-government agitator, his father's activities as a spy and assassin for King Charles II, rape. This book explores the family background of James Cotter and also that of Elizabeth Squibb (who prosecuted him). New evidence is offered that Jonathan Swift was commenting on the case in some carefully written letters and poems. Was this a deliberate miscarriage of justice or just a number of people seeking revenge?
