He received his Ph.D. in Religious Ethics from the University of Chicago, M.Div. at Vanderbilt University, and his B.S. in Religion and Economics at Texas Christian University. An ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), he is also the recipient of numerous awards for community engagement.
