After his escape, he became an abolitionist and published his memoir, \u003ci\u003eTwelve Years a Slave\u003c\/i\u003e (1853). He gave many lectures in support of the abolitionist causes and aided in the Underground Railroad for fugitive slaves. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eDolen Perkins-Valdez, PhD, is the author of the \u003ci\u003eNew York Times\u003c\/i\u003e bestselling novel \u003ci\u003eWench\u003c\/i\u003e.
